Formed in June 1986, LICH began as an alliance of
associations representing the interests of landscapers in
Hawaii. In 2002, membership was expanded to include
corporations and individuals working in the green industry.
Our goals are to:

  • Promote public awareness and appreciation of the
    landscape industry
  • Encourage and support funding and research
  • Promote training and certification opportunities
  • Work toward favorable legislation for our industry
  • Forge partnerships with groups like the Hawaii Farm
Bureau Federation, Division of Forestry and Wildlife,
Kaulunani, Outdoor Circle, CTAHR, and others
  • Continue to sponsor an annual state wide green industry
    conference and trade show
At a Strategic Planning Retreat held in 2001, business members of the landscape industry concluded that LICH as a statewide association composed of all elements of our industry, can provide the necessary leadership to identify and meet the needs of its members and act as their voice. Critical issues— such as: lack of recognition and respect for the green industry, lost funding opportunities, lowered standards of workmanship, lack of presence in government and education—need to be addressed now. As participants of the Retreat wrote, “Unless positive action is taken, the industry will continue to languish below its full potential.”
We encourage you to consider the benefits of LICH membership described within our website and apply for membership today.

Did You Know

In 1986 LICH helped CTAHR to initiate the first (and only) landscape industry survey, which at that time estimated the annual net income of the Green Industry at over $500 million, and full time employment at over 11,000.

A LICH committee wrote "Landscape Management Guidelines", a vital tool for condominium managers which is available for sale in the LICH Publications section of this page.

LICH was reorganized in 2001 as a 501-c6 non-profit organization, which allows us tax exempt status and the ability to lobby at the Hawaii State Legislature.

A sister organization, LICH Foundation, was created in 2006 as a 501-c3 non-profit, and now administers the national CLT certification programs in all four counties of Hawaii, and is qualified as a training provider eligible for Hawaii State Dept. of Labor training funds to assist those who enroll in LICH' certification classes and tests.

LICH Foundation works in association with neighbor island organizations HILA, KLIC and MALP to sponsor extensive training in landscape maintenance and irrigation throughout the state.

LICH is working with other organizations in Hawaii to develop an Industry driven system of self-regulation concerning any restrictions on planting and importation of known invasive plants.
